2011 Senior Expo Educational Seminars
Grand Traverse Civic Center - Community Conference Room - May 18, 2011

BASA is pleased to offer an education series as part of Senior Expo 2011.  These education sessions will be offered throughout Senior Expo in the Civic Center Conference Room, just off the lobby to the right. 

  • There is no cost for attendance at the seminars. 
  • Guests may attend any or all of the Seminars.
  • Door Prizes will be awarded at each Seminar
  • Space will be limited, so guests are encouraged to arrive a bit in advance of the established seminar start time. 
  • Lunch and Learn session includes a Box Lunch.

Guests will:

  • receive handout materials to accompany the presentations;
  • find literature tables offering information to broaden topic knowledge or learn more about the presenters and their particular business or organization; and
  • have ample time for questions and answers.

Come to this lunch and learn session prepared to have a fun time.  You will learn about housing options as well as legal and medical issues for your piece of mind.
 
 The popular “Expo Game Show” will have you cheering on your team, and our moderator Mike Sheehan, will keep the questions lively.

Presenters for this session:

Michael Sheehan
Mike Sheehan is a retired college English professor who is currently an author and radio host.  He runs a senior web site (seniors.tcnet.org) and has been appointed to the State Advisory Council on Aging.

Connie Hintsala-
Owner Alliance for Senior Housing, LLC

Connie has served the greater Grand Traverse Area for over 10 years, offering a free senior housing placement service.  Her background gives knowledge and understanding into how a home is to operate and what it takes to be a care giver.  This experience is what gives her the expertise in placing individuals into compatible homes.  She truly is a “senior housing specialist.”

Charlotte Lundy, RN, BA

Charlotte Lundy has had over 40 years of nursing experience.  Her focus of expertise has been in community nursing.  Char has worked on her local ambulance, public health, home care, hospice, discharge planning and Long Term Care Safety Programs.  She presently is an instructor for Community Services Network, a Parish Nurse, as well as doing consultant work.

Deborah Rysso,
Rizzo, Rysso & Wingfield, PLLC

Deborah Rysso has practiced elder law since moving to Traverse City in 2004 and is a partner at Rysso & Wingfield, PLLC.  Deborah is active in the Traverse City community; she is a member of the Bay Area Senior Advocates, local Parkinson’s Support Group Board, local Bar Association’s Board of Governors, served for several years as president of the local Women Lawyer’s Association, and has taught as an adjunct professor at Northwestern Michigan College.  She has completed the arduous ICLE Probate and Estate Planning Certificate Program.  Her law degree is from Thomas M. Cooley Law School and her undergraduate degree if from the University of Michigan.

Jim Harvery, Great Lakes Therapy House Calls

Jim Harvey has been a physical therapist in Traverse City since 2000.  In 2003 he founded Great Lakes Therapy House Calls, providing physical and occupational therapy to seniors in their homes, senior apartments and assisted living facilities.  He now employs 22 physical and occupational therapists throughout Grand Traverse and the surrounding counties.

Martha Hubbell, Zumba Dancing

Martha Hubbell is from Columbia.  She moved from South American to the United States 13 years ago and has been teaching Latin dance for 3 years.  Zumba dancing originates from Columbia and is a fun way to introduce dance and Latin music and exercise at the same time.  She also teaches Spanish, and includes that in some of her dancing.
